How to play on PC and mobile Controls published for this game.

PC controls

  • The itch page does not list keys.
  • It is a Ren’Py visual novel. Clicks and Enter usually advance text, and choices are buttons. That is how Ren’Py behaves, not a control scheme Mcryx printed.
  • Click the frame after you start it so keyboard input has somewhere to go.
  • Read the content warning on the page before you turn the sound up. It names gore, blood, violence, flashing lights, character death, and vulgar language.

Mobile and other devices

  • The itch page offers an Android APK (the 1.1 release file is listed around 336 MB).
  • The page does not say whether the HTML5 frame itself is laid out for phones.
  • Platforms listed are HTML5, Windows, macOS, and Android.
  • There is no iOS build in the listing we checked.

Short horror visual novels

Insomnia is Mcryx’s short psychological-horror visual novel inspired by the Jeff the Killer creepypasta. It retells that backstory through an original, gender-neutral high-school student. The itch page says plainly that this is an unofficial fan game.

What the story says it is

The description puts you in the wrong place at the worst time. You play a gender-neutral high-school student whose ordinary life turns dark after getting caught up with the wrong crowd. Rumors spread. You meet a mysterious man with a Glasgow smile. The pitch calls Insomnia a psychological horror short visual novel inspired by the classic Jeff the Killer creepypasta, reimagining his backstory through an original protagonist. It then draws a line: this is an unofficial fan-made Jeff the Killer visual novel. Some characters are original. Jeff and other established characters belong to their respective creators.

Tags are creepypasta, psychological horror, survival horror, thriller, and yandere. Genre: visual novel. Made with Ren’Py. Status: Released. Author: Mcryx. The average-session field says “A few seconds.” That value is not credible next to a short story visual novel, and the materials for this site flag it as developer metadata that should not be quoted as the playtime. This page leaves the length unstated because the description itself never gives minutes or hours.

The warning block is aimed at adults: gore, blood, violence, flashing lights, character death, and vulgar language. Intended for mature audiences. There is no separate “mild” mode described. On 29 September 2026 the listing showed 4.7 from 450 ratings and an update time of 21 September 2026. No publish date and no devlog were on the page we saved, so the release day is unknown here. Price is name your own price.

Version 1.1, language, and endings

The page’s version 1.1 notes are short: main-character adjustments, new choices, route corrections, and text polish. It does not list the choices or say which route was wrong before the patch. The browser file this page embeds is the HTML5 upload from that listing, html-classic.itch.zone/html/19087228/index.html with the version query v=1788453946, sized 900 by 506. It is an inline embed on the itch page.

A small FAQ on the itch page asks whether other translations are coming. The answer there is that the game is currently English only, and that the creator is open to Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian later. Those languages are not in the build we are describing. Do not expect a language menu full of them.

The itch page does not say how many endings exist. Videos elsewhere use “all endings” in the title. That is not a count this site can verify from the creator’s page, so there is no ending checklist here. The 1.1 notes mention route corrections and new choices, which implies branches, and then stop. If you want a route map, it is not in the sourced materials.

Platforms, and what “fan-made” means for downloads

Official files, in the sense of “files the creator uploaded,” are the HTML5 player, Windows, macOS, and the Android APK on the Mcryx itch page. “Unofficial” on that page refers to the Jeff the Killer characters, not to a mystery about which website made the game. Mcryx is the author of this visual novel. Jeff’s original creators are someone else. Downloading Insomnia from a random APK blog is still a bad idea. The APK the creator posted is the one attached to mcryxstudios.itch.io/insomnia-jeff-the-killer.

DeadPlate.io is a fan site embedding that HTML5 file. It is not Mcryx’s site, and it is not an official creepypasta licensee. The frame is the same kind of itch embed used for the other browser games here. Click Play to load it. Nothing is fetched from the embed host until you do.

How to approach a first play

Because the creator did not publish a route guide, the practical advice is the warning and the patch notes. If flashing lights or gore are a problem, skip the game. The warning is not hedged. If you play, the 1.1 text is the current one: the creator says the protagonist was adjusted, choices were added, routes were corrected, and the writing was polished. Replaying after a choice is how you would see a branch. Which choice matters is not written down on the page.

Search interest around this game often mixes it up with the creepypasta itself, with comics, and with questions about whether Jeff sleeps. Those are not features of this visual novel. The game’s own sentence is narrower: a short fan story, an original student, and a man with a Glasgow smile. Keep the download on the Mcryx page if you leave the browser version.
